the process.

These paintings are a testament to the meditative art of ink-making. They are crafted using hand-made, artisanal ink derived from the everyday bounty in our homes and yards. From the vibrant hues of berries to the earthy tones of acorn caps and rusty pennies to the golden glow of turmeric and nuts, every stroke celebrates the beauty and diversity of what’s available right under our noses.

collecting.

Walking outside with my pouch of plant shears, gloves, and collection bags, I search for interesting berries and take in the various scents around me. I look for things, predominantly plants, with which I can make ink.  When I peer around outdoors, most people I encounter are curious about what I’m picking or looking for.  It’s been an awkward and funny way to meet neighbors as I casually or not-so-casually inspect their weeds or stand outside with bright, pokeberry-stained gloves.

chemistry.

The next step involves the mad scientist phase. You start by examining what you have picked and are about to make ink with. You wash and carefully dry it, and then pick it apart. Add the ingredients to a stainless steel bowl, mash it, and strain it until it becomes a fine ink. Next, you transfer it into an old pot and let it sit on the stove for hours until it develops into a rich hue full of depth. Each time differs from the last, as we continuously strive to improve the process.

creating.

There is something about slowly sliding an inky brush across a textured surface that’s a balm to my soul.  Not-so-patiently waiting to see how the color changes as it dries, adding more layers of ink, mimicking the rhythms of life and nature, one on top of the other, a constant meditative experiment of tactile sensations.

connection.

It’s great to connect with people by dreaming up new things to make ink with, going on adventures, sharing recipes, ink, painting, and creating. Cooking brings people together, painting is therapeutic, and creating is our infinite way to romanticize and bring pleasure into our daily lives.
